City Park: the unique way of living in Brasília passes through here.

One of the largest urban parks in the world is more than just a beautiful, wooded area that is strategic for the urban balance and organization of the Plano Piloto. Many residents of Brasília consider it a way of life. Being able to be close to it every day is an invitation to quality of life and well-being. Learn more about the history of the city park, its importance to residents of Brasília, and the value it brings to those who have the privilege of living near it.

The Story

In the early 1970s, Brasília was undergoing major urban and housing expansion. The city was growing more and more and needed public facilities that were up to the task. It was then that Governor Elmo Serejo Farias decided to create a park between Asa Sul and what would become the Southwest Sector, to offer leisure and entertainment to the population, also serving, as it is a very wooded place, to alleviate the impacts of the drought and heat of the Cerrado.

The Parque da Cidade was then born, inaugurated on October 11, 1978, and named after Rogério Pithon Farias, in honor of the governor's son who had recently died in a car accident. The urban design was designed by Lucio Costa, with buildings by architects Oscar Niemeyer and Glauco Campelo, tiles by Athos Bulcão and landscaping by Burle Marx.

The opening of the park was a major event in the city, attracting thousands of people to Praça das Fontes – where musical performances took place – and to the Wave Pool, the first of its kind in Latin America, which featured equipment to simulate waves measuring approximately 1 meter high. It was a huge success that attracted crowds every weekend.

Over the years, the park has established itself as the main meeting point for people from Brasília of all ages, with multi-sports courts, artificial lakes, running tracks, pedal boats, an equestrian center, a go-kart track, bicycles for rent and many other amenities. Its 420 hectares of green space – considered the largest urban park in South America – has become a permanent part of the daily life of the people of Brasília.

It is also important to remember that the site incorporated two other parks that already existed there before 1978: Parque Ana Lídia, where the famous Foguetinho is located, and Nicolândia, the first amusement park in Brasília.

In the 1980s, Parque da Cidade became nationally famous with the song “Eduardo e Mônica” by the band Legião Urbana, as it was the place chosen as the couple’s meeting point in the story. There is even a monument in the park in homage to the song, with its score engraved on an iron sculpture.

Back in the 90s, Parque da Cidade was one of the areas responsible for further enhancing the spring Southwest Sector, since the new housing would be very close. In 1997 the name was changed: from Rogério Pithon Farias to Sarah Kubitschek. This year also marked the end of the Wave Pool.

The park has recently undergone renovations to improve accessibility, increase the number of trails and cycle paths and restore the sports courts. The GDF has already announced the return of the Wave Pool, completely remodeled and with new attractions.

Parque da Cidade has been a success for almost 45 years and is proof that the emotional memory of Brasília residents can coexist in harmony with the needs and changes of modern times.

Living near Parque da Cidade: synonymous with quality of life and real estate appreciation.

The Parque da Cidade is part of the Brasilia lifestyle. The list of leisure options is extensive and varied: multi-sports courts, gym equipment, running and cycling tracks, skateboarding and skating rinks, playgrounds for children, amusement parks, kiosks and restaurants with a variety of food options, go-kart track, equestrian center, lake, picnic areas with barbecues, exhibition pavilion and not to mention the events promoted by public or private institutions and groups, always for the benefit of the community.

The park is a landmark in the city of Brasília and is officially part of Asa Sul, but is located between Asa Sul and Setor Sudoeste. It can be accessed via Via W5 Sul, Eixo Monumental and via EPIG, a road that connects Setor Sudoeste to Eixo Monumental and starts from EPTG, which connects the neighborhoods of Taguatinga, Águas Claras and Guará to Plano Piloto.

The neighborhoods Asa Sul and Sudoeste, adjacent to Parque da Cidade, are noble and highly sought-after areas for those seeking to live in Brasília. With a privileged location, mobility, leisure, security and a consolidated infrastructure, the properties located in these areas have some of the highest valued square meters in the Federal District.
