Like the Plano Piloto, the Sudoeste was also designed by architect and urban planner Lucio Costa. In 1987, Costa published a document called Brasília Revisitada in which he advocated the creation of new neighborhoods to house the capital's growing population. Among them was the Bairro Oeste Sul, which was renamed Sudoeste and officially created on July 10, 1989. Designed to have the same characteristics as the Asas Sul and Norte, the Sudoeste is within the listed area of Brasília, so its buildings cannot exceed six floors and the pilotis must remain free for pedestrian access. The division between blocks 100 and 300 also follows the same logic as the Plano Piloto. The first buildings in the Southwest Sector began to be occupied in 1993.
