Spring has arrived and with it, the many flowers that beautify the country's capital. There are more than 100 species of flowering trees, both native and exotic, spread throughout the Federal District. The most common ones found in our green area are the ipê, the flamboyant, the cagaita, the pink cassia, the blind machado, the sapucaia, the sucupira, the pequizeiro, the jacaranda-da-bahia and the quaresmeira.
According to Novacap, Plano Piloto is the place with the highest concentration of flowering trees in the Federal District, with around 1.5 million. The most famous of these, the ipê, has 200 thousand units planted in this Administrative Region alone. There are 700 thousand in total in our little square.

The ipês that we see in Brasília, by the way, despite being a tree native to the Cerrado, were only planted here in the 1970s as part of a strategy by the Department of Parks and Gardens of Novacap – headed by Francisco Ozanan Coelho – to add more color to the city and create a contrast with the very blue sky and the gray of the buildings.
Check out some characteristics of our main flowers:
Ipe – Flowers with colors purple (Handroatus impetiginosus), yellow (Handroatus serratifolius), pink (Handroatus heptaphyllus), white (Tabebuia róseo-alba) and green (Cybistax antisyphilitica). Each type blooms at a different time.

Flamboyant (Delonix regia) – Large red, yellow and orange flowers that occupy the entire treetop.

Cagaita (Eugenia dysenterica) – Bright green flowers, sometimes slightly translucent. There are also aromatic white flowers.

Pink Cassia (Cassia grandis) – Pinkish-yellow flowers and very showy.

Axe-shaped scaber (Physpcalymma scaberrimum) – Flowers with various shades of pink often used in landscaping.

Sapucaia (Lecythis pisonis) – Flowers that are born with a pink tone and turn green over time. Often used for decoration.

Sucupira (Pterodon emarginatus) – Lush pink flowers that have anti-inflammatory medicinal properties.

Bahia Rosewood (Dalbergia nigra) – Large, fragrant flowers, with blue or purple coloring.

Lent tree (Tibouchina granulosa) – Large, showy flowers, they bloom in white and gradually turn purple.
